The Truth About I Timothy 2:11-12, Part 1

I Timothy 2:11-12 has been used more than any other passage to silence and marginalize women in the church. In this epidose we began showing that when interpreted in the historical context, it is obvious that Paul is addressing a local situation in Ephesus where Timothy, to whom he is writing, is confronting false teaching.

Paul Affirmed Women Overseers

When looking at the Greek language in which Paul wrote, it is clear that he did not exclude women from functioning as "episcopas," translated as "bishop" and "overseer."

Paul Included Women in the 5-Fold Ministry

A friend called and asked what the Greek word was for "man" in Ephesians 4:8 where Paul is introducing the so-called "5-Fold Ministry." When I checked the Greek, it was obvious to me that Paul had not excluded women from these leadership-ministry gifts.

Paul's Spiritual Mother

Paul never mentions a spiritual father but he does mention a spiritual mother in Romans 16:13. Although we can't know for sure the identity of this woman, the evidence points to a particular woman that may surprise you.

In Romans 16:7 Paul greets Andronicus and Junia whom he says are "of note among the apotles." Junia is a feminine name, and although some have argued the name should be Junias, which is male, the manuscript and historical evidence are overwhelming that "Junia" is the correct rendering.
